August 2007, the month of great outages

August 29th, 2007 · No Comments

August 2007 has been suffering from some of the worst outages possible and many of them. When I realized that Skype was down, I was alarmed. One of the biggest companies out, something that hit over 200 millions of user. Durinh the 48 h it was out the topic was blogged about and the whole thing considered to be a scandal without proportions.

A few days later Blogger.com and all of the blogs in the domain blogspot.com was out. Luckily for only one hour and not the busiest.

And then a few days ago Youtube got hit by the August “curse”.  For almost five hours the entire site was down due to database problems. That makes Google a quite unfortunate company this month.

Ubuntu also suffered when eight of their servers got hacked(not the Ubuntu software’s fault according to Canonical) and started to attack other systems.  Last I want to apologize for the downtime we had this weekend which made the users arrive at a site promoting life insurances. That was because of an unpaid bill for the domainname. We have nothing to do with the site displayed instead and we were not hacked. Thank god for that!

I think programmers need to analyze more problems that might cause downtimes earlier . At least in big companies. What do you think?
