Outside Sweden, roundabout dogs is a pretty unknown phenomenon. To bad because they’re a whole a lot of fun. For you who doesn’t know what I’m talking about this is what a roundabout dog is.

Definition of roundabout dog: “Non-professionally produced sculptural art in the form of a dog or other animal made from any material which, often concealed by the darkness of the night, is placed in a public place, preferably in a roundabout.” As described at  www.roundaboutdog.net.

Roundabout dogs came to be when a concrete dog, placed in a roundabout in Sweden, made by the artist Stina Opitz were destroyed. This was off course not liked by the locals. One off them made a dog in wood instead and placed it were the other one had stood.

Somehow placing sculptures of dogs in roundabout became very popular and by now it’s widely spread across Sweden.  Some time ago the first roundabout dog in Germany was found(the picture on the left) and maybe this could set of a reaction over the world.  Hopefully people could make them in other countries too.

The sculptures can be made by anyone and in any material you find appropriate. Believe me when I say that  I’ve seen all kinds of stupid dogs.

These dogs have no known purpose and is made just for fun. The authorities in your country might not be entirely happy when you place your piece of art  in the roundabout.

Note that the dogs can be placed in other places than roundabouts, any public place will do.

So call some friends, make a dog  and place it somewhere in the cover of the darkness. Everything will be more fun at midnight.
