Vista Ultimate users will have to wait for “extras”

September 21st, 2007 · 20 Comments

Tomorrow is the beginning of the fall and end of summer 2007. That means time is running out for Microsoft’s promise to release new  extras to Vista Ultimate users.  Earlier this year Microsoft wrote this in their Ultimate Extras blog:

“We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in January (Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs) until they meet the high quality bar required by our enthusiastic customers—and we believe that we can achieve that bar by the end of this summer”.

The latest entry in this blog was on July 2nd and that says something about how development is going. Apparently they couldn’t reach the “bar” by the end of the summer which ends tomorrow. DreamScene and the Language Packs for the Vista users seams far away.

Another disappointment from Microsoft but we’re used to that by now.

EDIT: The previously released version of DreamScene is NOT the full version and neither are the language packs which was intended to be shipped by Microsoft before the end of summer.  Maybe that should clear things up a bit!

How exactly are more language packs an “Ultimate Extra”?

Failure on Microsoft’s behalf…being able to see the same broken OS in a different language isn’t a bonus.

Um, I already have DreamScene (the video desktop) was offered it months ago on windows update.
And the language packs have been showing up on WU for months too.

But they’ve been out for yonks?

I have dream scene installed and the language packs have been available for ages before that.

those arent the full released versions, dreamscene is a beta preview and the language packs are somewhat incomplete.

Aw camoon, software development is HARD. Commercial development is hard to a higher factor.

I’d rather have software “when it’s done” than rush some street dates for some whining idiots. Then again i’d try to abstain giving out dates too.

IT has come to the point where Microsoft can no longer hold a candle up to MAC.

However a lot of people who avidly steal software, download movies and music cannot do so on MAC…

    … just yet

You need to check your facts Mr. Blogger - while yes it does suck that there’s not much content available under the Extras, Dreamscape, the language packs, the hdd encryption extras and a couple of more games have been available as “Windows Vista Ultimate Extras” for quite some time…

The joke is on you for not getting a Mac instead.

We’ve been able to run Quartz Compositions (much cooler and easy to make yourself) and screensavers as desktops for ages

It think people should get their facts straight before leeping on the knock microsoft bandwagon ,
both dreamscape and language updates have been out for months,

Microsoft is focusing on Windows 7 Vienna. I would be too, Vista is a failure.

    @ Slaven

It’s ‘Mac’, not ‘MAC’. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control (see “MAC address” on Wikipedia). If you want to be a Mac fanatic, then use the right name!

As for Microsoft, aren’t these “extras” just additional applications/plug-ins? Reminds me of Microsoft Plus! back in the day. What’s the point on buying a more expensive OS for this? Shouldn’t the OS do the basic, low-level work and additional applications add the bells and whistles? I guess I’d rather pay for a cheap OS and buy the features once I see them later (and determine if they’re really worth spending more money on, or if I should just look for a FOSS app to do it for me)…or just use a Mac or *nix box and get them for free.
