Whitespaces are needed

I believe many you have noticed that the winter is approaching. At least if you live somewhere in the north. Sweden is about to receive a big amount of bad weather from Britain. Today we had a little preview of it with lots of snow and some awful wind. I came in this very “white” mood and started to think about a very reproduced painting, “White rabbit in snowstorm”.

I have made my own reproduction of it. Let me hear what you think!!

Since this blog is mostly about web-design I  have tried to come up with something related to the color white to write about. What I thought of was “whitespace”. Basically it’s those parts on your page that has only the background color and no content. Many web-designers don’t think about that the parts in the design that’s white is also a part of the design. Not only as a color but as a way of making other parts of the design more beautiful.

Remember that a background image is not necessarily a whitespace.

Except that it can change your design drastically I have very few things to say about whitespace. If you don’t feel happy about a layout but can’t put your finger on what you should change it could be the whitespace spooking. Try increasing or decreasing the margin and padding between your elements. The best way to learn what works is to practice and try different things out .

Consider this my tip of the day and enjoy the beginning of the winter!

You’re right; I don’t consider white space enough on my site. When you don’t know what you’re doing with web design, it’s very difficult to use simplicity well, so I think people turn to adding more and more elements, and get a complex design that also doesn’t work well … that’s probably one of the marks of talent, to really know how to use the basics to best advantage?

And yes, it’s painfully obvious that winter is just around the corner, at least in my little corner of the world…

I don’t have any white space on my site… I’ll take this tip into consideration!

I’m very sorry you’re getting all our bad weather! I hope it’ll pass soon and head on to Eastern Europe. :D
