My view on feminism

I recently ended up in a discussion over at Snark forums about feminism. Snark is a forum with lots of girls. It goes about 8 girls on each guy, so you can understand I had a tough time when I started criticizing feminism openly. I have now realized that starting that discussion was a big mistake. I should have known better.

Some persons had a hard time understanding what exactly I didn’t like about feminism so I thought I should explain my opinions in this blog post.

Here in Sweden, the word feminist  has been abused very much. It is a word with a lot of power in it but tend to get used far to often and without care. I don’t know about other countries but here we have a very radical type of feminists which tries to push men down as much as possible. Someone have pointed out to me what the word really mean:

fem·i·nism
–noun
1.   the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
2.   (sometimes initial capital letter) an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.
3.   feminine character

Sounds very nice :). I agree that the rights should be the same. In Sweden however, I think there has been a slight misunderstanding. It seems that they want to make men and women equal. Yes, I mean equal as in wearing the same clothes and having the same names. They even wanted to raise girls and boys the same way. That’s ridiculous.

Many of the public faces representing feminism are also communists(I know that it’s wrong to associate communism and feminism). In fact, most of the feminists in Sweden are more to the left when it comes to politic. Could be a coincidence though.

All these things have influenced my point of view. I also believe that feminism is a limited way of looking at discrimination. Feminists tend to get all hooked up with the “women rights” that they forget about other people also being discriminated. Who should get a job if a foreigner and a woman applies for it. In Sweden it’d be the woman no matter what education the other guy had.

It is my hope that those of you discussing this with me over at Snark as well as other people will understand why I think the way I do and respect that. I am well aware that there might be people who call themselves feminists that are really neat persons.

Thanks for coming clean, this definitely clears things up a bit. For what it’s worth, it’s often difficult to detect tonal nuances on the Internet, which may have contributed to the confusion on the thread at Snark. Plus, I can tell that English isn’t your first language, and you seemed quite frustrated when you were trying to communicate your opinion. I hope you’re not put off — we’re a nice bunch really. :)

A group in my city wants all the public washrooms to be unisex (the same washrooms for men and women)…

I think the discussion was just a confusion based on the term feminist.
